For me, The Urge is a perfect way to celebrate Concert Sutra’s ten year anniversary, which Leah Yetter Photographer and I started in November, 2003! On November 22nd and 23rd of 2013, The Urge held an awesome two night event at the Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri to release the first studio record in about 13 years. Since The Urge was always one of my favorite bands in the 90’s where I learned of them as a regular opener for my band 311, I always made an effort to see them as many times as I could until they disbanded to do other things. UNTIL RECENT YEARS!!! One of Steve Ewing’s (the lead singer) of The Urge’s endeavors was to get into the restaurant business, particularly very creative hot dogs! I am guessing in recent years, because of his entrepreneurship, the band mostly plays St. Louis and the surrounding Missouri areas. Thus leaving out (with the exception of the 311 cruise and maybe a couple of other branch outs) those of us around the US, particularly me in Atlanta. However, once I found out about the CD release of “Galvanized,” I couldn’t resist the trip from Atlanta to St. Louis to reunite with the guys I had grown to love to watch almost two decades before. Being the awesome guys they always have been, they offered a fun and affordable VIP package, so I signed up for both nights!!!
First I have to say that from previous unrelated visits, I already loved St. Louis, so making the trip to experience this was a no brainer! Even further, Heidi, Tim, Zuri, Sensi, and Tosh Eytalis of my 311 familia welcomed me into their home, making my trip even more fantastic. In addition to all of the obvious reasons to enjoy my trip to The Urge, the Steve’s Hot Dogs on the Hill were amazing, as was the venue, The Pageant! Great times all around.
First, we were invited to the killer sound check and backstage pre-show festivities. LOVE!!! If you have never met the fellas from The Urge, they are literally a group of the nicest most humble and gracious guys in the industry. I was so very honored to be a part of these festivities, and to also see that many of the familiar faces from the 311 family also made the trip! Always a treat. The Urge makes me wish that St. Louis was closer to Georgia. I would be able to see them so much more if that was the case. No doubt! The CD release took me back to my Urge history. Since I mostly relied on memory and the 311 tour history – without pulling out all of my old ticket stubs, the following were the shows over the years that I had the pleasure of catching The Urge with along with others like the Deftones, No Doubt, Shootyz Groove, and others:
1) April of 1994 – Sonic Sunday Atlanta, MasqueradeMusicPark 311 and The Urge
2) October 29, 1995 – The Moon, Tallahassee, Florida – The Urge opened for 311
3) August 10, 1996 – MontgomeryMotorSportsPark, Montgomery, Alabama – The Urge opened for 311
4) August 31, 1996 – KingsStreetPalace, Charleston, South Carolina – The Urge opened for 311
5) September 11, 1996 – Electric Ballroom, Philadelphia, PA – The Urge and Deftones opened for 311
6) September 13, 1996 – Mullins Center UMASS, Amherst, MA – The Urge opened for 311
7) The Urge solo headliner show(s) at the Masquerade in Atlanta
8 & 9) November 22 and 23, 2013 at the Pageant for the new studio CD release after 13 years! Two shows back to back! Two nights in a row!!! On November 22, I rode the rail in the very front in front of Karl and Matt. On November 23rd, I danced my buns off in the front row of the balcony! Different perspectives really make for a different experience! It wasn’t until writing this did I even realize how similar the set lists were both nights (with some major exceptions)! I loved every minute of both nights.
I don’t have set lists from the earlier days, but I do have both nights from the CD release shows, as well as lots of video on the Concert Sutra You Tube channel. I will include come links below.
